Hebe Mattos de Castro is an historian specialized in slavery, in particular the socio-cultural relations within slavery in the society of nineteenth century Rio de Janeiro. At present she is professor at the Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF). She was a professor at Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF) and has been a visiting professor at the following universities: University of Michigan (1996), École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (2004 and 2008), Stanford University (2009), Universidad de Santiago de Chile (2010), Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (2013) and Columbia University (2014). She has also completed postdoctoral studies at the University of Maryland (1996-97), at UNICAMP (2000-01) and at the Sorbonne (2008). She is the author of three published books, dozens of articles and was responsible for the organization of several specialized publications.
