About the website

CapoeiraHistory.com is a website created in 2019, as part of the Contemporary Capoeira project in Rio de Janeiro 1948-82, based at the University of Essex in partnership with the Laboratory of Oral History and Image (LABHOI) at the Fluminense Federal University (UFF), and initially sponsored by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), UK.

The site houses the projects Contemporary Capoeira in Rio de Janeiro 1948-82 – about the development and expansion of contemporary capoeira in the city, and Angolan Roots – about the links between capoeira and Angolan combat games and musical bows.

CapoeiraHistory.com also publishes a blog, with works by masters, researchers and scholars of capoeira and martial arts in general, as well as university professors with related works. The blog disseminates research around the thematic axes of the two projects mentioned above, or related to the history of capoeira in Brazil and the world, as well as the history of other martial arts, especially those of the African diaspora.

Meet the team that worked on the Contemporary Capoeira project, as well as the filmmakers of the film Jogo de Corpo. Capoeira and Ancestrality from the Angolan Roots project.

The website is currently coordinated by Prof. Dr. Matthias Röhrig Assunção, from the University of Essex, and co-ordinated by Renata Daflon.
